“An entire generation disappeared 25 years ago, an entire #generation was killed and murdered and an entire generation has grown up since. Srebrenica is a yardstick that Bosnians use to measure their lives,”
said Emir Suljagić, the director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.
“A big part of Europe’s identity is based on #opposition to Islam and cultures and ideas that came from the east. There are still mainstream conservative circles in Europe who consider Bosnians to be the unwelcome remnants of an occupying force,” said Suljagić.
When the #Christchurch killer played an anti-Muslim Bosnian war song during his live stream of the massacre in New Zealand last year, many Bosnians were shocked that their experience had inspired a brutal #attack on the other side of the world.
“The Christchurch attack opened people’s eyes to how certain ideologies can be picked up internationally,” said Karčić.
